OMG this convention is great! There is so much excitement in the air. Michelle Obama’s speech (see it on YouTube.) The South Carolina delegation has been very busy since arriving here Sunday. We’ve met hundreds of influential Party leaders, celebrities, and fellow Democrats from around the country. And it’s only Tuesday!
Our week of activities officially began Sunday night with a festive celebration at the Denver Museum of Natural Science. During this event, we heard great speeches from Congressmen Jim Clyburn and John Spratt. The reception really helped to prepare us for the level of excitement that we would experience on Monday.
Monday marked the official start of the Democratic National Convention. Our delegation began its morning with a breakfast meeting which featured special guest, former Secretary of State Madeline Albright. Her speech was excellent to say the least. Many SC Dems left the meeting ready to help elect Senator Barack Obama and other Democrats in the fall. After breakfast, members of our delegation headed to separate meetings, but joined together later at the Pepsi Center for the opening session of the convention.
If Monday night could be described in two words, they would be historic and phenomenal. Here’s how some of our delegates described last night:
“Spectacular. The night was full of emotion- inspired by Senator Ted Kennedy’s appearance and his dedication to Obama’s campaign. I thought that Michelle (Obama) was awesome! She defined how a truly supportive, caring environment can lead to individual success!!”- Wannetta Mallette, Obama Delegate (N. Charleston)
“Last night’s convention was so heart-warming and touching. We had great speakers…good networking and a sense of unity among the Democrats. I am so pleased and honored to be a part of this historical event.” – Loretta Streater McNeal, Obama Delegate (Chesterfield)
“Last night’s convention was history in the making. The evening was an event that introduced Barack Obama to the world; the brilliant competent, charismatic forward-looking leader who will transform our country from stagnation to prosperity. Michelle was awesome. She captured the essence of family and family values. Ted Kennedy represents the workers who are the backbone of our country. The final moments were a snapshot of the loving, nurturing strong family who we will place in the White House on January 20, 2009.” – Ilene Kahn, Obama Delegate (Charleston)
