As I write this, I am less than a week away from attending the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. I never thought I’d come to wholeheartedly support any candidate for president as I have done for Senator Barack Obama. I think that people have found in him what they have been looking for in a leader: integrity, intelligence and intuition. I have so admired the way that Senator Obama’s candidacy has awakened and challenged voters, that I was compelled to become more involved and become a delegate.
Since the state convention in May, I’ve learned so much from the dedicated staff, volunteers and officials who work for the party. It takes time, commitment, patience and tenacity to move people from, “Whatʼs the use?” to “Yes, we can!”
We have done a good job during the primary, and must do more in the upcoming general election. The stakes are high in South Carolina. A win for Obama will have a positive effect in my opinion, on statewide and local elections for Democrats. Our challenge as delegates has been and will be to keep the momentum going from now until November. I know that the end of this campaign will not be determined at this convention in Denver, but at the polls in Novmember.
I have every reason to be optimistic, and my commitment matches my optimism.
