The debate is over and everyone’s arguing about who won and who lost. It was exciting to be on location with all the media. An entire parking lot on the SCSU campus was devoted to national trucks with massive satellite feeds and the press building offered multiple rooms with rows of tables, wide-screened TVs, and strained wireless connections. Take a look at some more photos from around the campus.

I especially liked the spin room where post-debate media gathered to get the “spin” on who won and/or lost from candidate spokespeople and South Carolinians.

The SCSU campus - complimented by a beautiful spring evening - was a perfect venue for the debate and thousands who came to represent their candidates or their causes. T-shirts, tents, placards, buses, trucks, posters - most everyone had a message they wanted to get out and figured the presence of the national media was a good way to get there.

It has been wonderful seeing all the national media attention we’re gotten here in South Carolina. It’s so great to see everyone working together for the best Democratic candidates ever!

I am proud that the DNC chose South Carolina to hold the first Democratic Presidential Debates again. It is too bad that SC Democrats are not taken as seriously when it comes to the General Election. But, I’m glad that Barack Obama ,(who is my favorite) and all of the rest of the candidates decided to come here to debate.
And, as far as the national media saying that Barack Obama didn’t do well during the debates, I have to disagree. Sure, he seemed a little nervous, but so did everyone at first, except for Kucinich and Ravel, (the two who have no chance at winning). Of course Kucinich and Ravel would not be as nervous, because they know that they will not win and are just using the race to get their points across. By the same token, of course the 6 serious contenders for the nomination would be more nervous, because they have more to lose.
As far as the hypothetical question that Brian Williams asked of Barack Obama about what he would do if he became President and we were attacked, and Obama responding that he would use the first responders first to secure the homeland and help out the ones who were directly hit, before he went after the attackers, I agree with Obama on that. Of course, pundits liked the answer given by Hillary Clinton better when she said something to the effect of, “I would immediately and with caution go after those who attacked us”, because that seemed to be the politically correct thing to say. Barack gave the non-politically correct answer and got hammered for it. He gave the right answer because in a situation like that, the correct thing to do would be to first secure the homeland and make sure that the ones who were directly hit were taken care of first. A President’s first response should not be to try to “immediately go after whoever attacked us”, because it would take time for that anyway. In the meantime, the President could be making sure that the homeland is secure and the people directly hit were being taken care of first.
The media also hammered him, when he said in response to the question about the Confederate Flag, something to the effect of “I think that the Confederate Flag belongs in a museum, but there are more pressing problems facing the African-American community right now”. They expected him to go on and on (just like Al Sharpton), about how that flag is offensive to blacks). But Obama, knowing what is the real problems facing us, gave the correct answer by saying that we do have more pressing issues right now. And besides, the flag is no longer on top of the Statehouse Building. It is on the grounds of the Statehouse, along with a monument dedicated to African-Americans. Those were the result of a compromise reached by the NAACP. So, I don’t know why some want to keep this debate going now.
Overall, I think that Joe Biden won the Debates, with Barack Obama a close second. I do not agree with the media that Hillary won, because she sounded scripted and she still has to work on that aspect of herself that gives her such high negatives among the American people, which is her seemingly unability to connect with the voters in terms of the “heart”!
My favorite candidates are:
1. Barack Obama
2. John Edwards
3. Wesley Clark, (if he ever decides to enter the race)
Okay candidates:
1. Joe Biden
2. Bill Richardson
3. Christopher Dodd
4. Al Gore (if he ever decides to enter the race)
